Shabbat Shalom

1000 Words

Bottoms Up

Love that pic'o'the beer summit.
It always makes me laugh.
Another Black Conservative posted it again late last night.
I spotted it this morning.
No I won't post it. Follow the link.
It's worth it.
Thanks, CB, for starting the weekend off right.
And thanks, Sargeant Crowley, for your long, brave, faithful service to our streets.
And hey, they also serve who only make tenured -- or elected -- fools of themselves.
Drink up!

Of course I was too young to get served, even for "the cause," but it kinda brings to mind those Cocktail Parties for Peace back in '69.

An yeah, look here for other use of the pic.

Viva

Think I'm off tomorrow, maybe early, to Laguna -- to babysit -- or, to hang with the 5 year olds -- plenty'o'floor-time with hot wheels and matchboxes -- while the parents are off playing Halloween dress-up, and I may be done online for the week so I'm playing a little catch-up and a little get-ahead tonight.

Camp Of The Saints
Thanks, Mr. Belvedere, for your reach last Monday:
--Boom Boom Boom shows the only upside to the game of soccer that I have ever seen.
Thanks also for pointing out Point 4 under your Terms. Away with Islamofascist. I've had to back up and switch up on some'o'my labelings.

To you friends who are bored with politics ... I feel ya. But until high school basketball starts, it's the only game in town. Pelosi. And we do try to have fun with it. Pelosi.

To faithful reader SJG, concerned about the bullets flying out here this morning, thanks for the message. Sure we sing Hatikva and fly the Israeli flag where I work, but I don't daven in the mornings down in North Hollywood. More likely to find me at Evening Prayer over the hill at St. Thomas in Hollywood.

And, speaking of shootings or speaking of saints, haven't seen it since the drive-in back when I was a kid, but I've been thinking about Viva Maria! for days now; that's how it became a Brigitte Bardot Week (sub theme, women armed) around here. Or as IMDB says:
Viva Fun! Viva Can-Can! Viva Adventure! Viva Strip Tease! Viva Love! Viva Boom-Boom!
And, I completely forgot -- or never noticed in my more visual youth -- that she could sing.

Obama SWAT/Death Panels Profile Imam in Detroitabad

Any discernable pattern here among the arrested?:
Mohammad Abdul Bassir
Muhammad Abdul Salaam
Abdul Saboor
Mujahid Carswell
Abdullah Beard
Mohammad Philistine
Yassir Ali Khan
Adam Hussain Ibraheem
Garry Laverne Porter-Wannabe
Ali Abdul Raqib
Oh, and Luqman Ameen Abdullah, deceased.
Just saying.
The Detroit leader of a nationwide fundamentalist Islamic group was fatally shot during a series of FBI raids Wednesday afternoon. The FBI arrested 10 people who have ties to the group called the Ummah, which translates to “the brotherhood.” The group consists primarily of those who converted to Islam while serving sentences in various prisons around the county. The nationwide leader is believed to be Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rapp Brown.

Mr. Abdullah was the imam of a mosque called Masjid al-Haqq, which was evicted by city officials in January for failure to pay property taxes. During the eviction, the police said, they found two guns and about 40 other weapons in Mr. Abdullah’s apartment. As a felon previously convicted of assault and carrying a concealed weapon, Mr. Abdullah was forbidden to possess firearms

Mitch Rapp Agrees With Robert Stacy McCain

Speaking of the pursuit of honor, on Monday The Other McCain shared his distaste for Gingrich:

NY23: Newt does Dede's dirty work
I was disgusted just now to see Newt Gingrich's
appearance on Greta Van Susteren's Fox News show
tonight, when he hit Doug Hoffman with a cheap shot,
saying Hoffman "doesn't live in the [23rd] District.
(Hey, ask some Georgians if Newt has any room to
talk about carpetbagging!)

Today stud Mitch Rapp joined father of six R.S. McCain, raising the ante from disgusting to bizarre:

"I've seen a lot of nasty shit over the years, George, but this one was disgusting." Rapp thought about it for a second and then corrected himself, saying, "I take that back. It wasn't disgusting . . . it was bizarre. There was nothing left, except chunks of indistinguishable goo."
Yeah, the Gingrich - Steele - Scozzafava Republicans: Indistinguishable, chunky goo.

'Course none of this is newsy news. CB, over at Another Black Conservative, reminds us today what he said last May:
When the GOP rebuilds, it needs to be rebuilt with quality candidates. When the Democrats are through bringing their 40 year old wish list to life, we will need strong principled people just to bring back America to anything close to what it used to be. This certainly won't happen with a large pack of unprincipled, spineless, big government loving RINOs.
The only way the John Cornyns, McCains, Powells and Specters of the party are ever going to hear us, is when we starve them to death by withholding our cash and votes.
9:30 p.m.: Regressive Dirty Tricks Update over at TOMcC. Bwaahahaha.

A.M. updatery: Michael Barone, like Mitch Rapp, also applies the Scozzafava bizarre annotation.

Edward Said Had A Problem With Languages

But there are worse things than rhetorical tricksiness.

Faithful reader SJG recently forwarded one of those emails that amuse with simple truths:
11 Things You Won't Learn In School

It is amusing, you bet. Kinda like something from the Readers Digest of my youth. And I mean that in a good way. The 11 untaught things were supposedly pointed out by Bill Gates, spoken when addressing some high school students. I like it -- though I'm not hard to please. I won't include it here, 'cos you probably already got it from someone else.

The originator of the forwarded email, a Ph.D. student at American University, closed her email with a quote from Edward Said. Yeah, that Said. Here's the quote:
"I have never known what language I spoke first, Arabic or English, or which one was really mine beyond doubt. What I do know, however, is that the two have always been together in my life, one resonating in the other, sometimes ironically, sometimes nostalgically, most often each correcting, and commenting, on the other."
My favorite pic of Professor Said is the one where he's chucking rocks at Israeli soldiers. Yeah, he was an adult at the time of the stoning. Pot-bellied, graying hair, baseball capped and throwing like a tenured, Ivy League professor. That's as deep into the learned educator as I ever needed to go.

I'm thinking Andrew Klavan covered Said pretty well in his 2008 novel Empire of Lies, where the character Arthur Rashid has gotta be Said:
"A hugely popular professor of multicultural studies, he was credidted with formulating the very concept of multiculturalism in his bestselling book, Eastern Mind, Western Eyes. ... It is the nature of culture that it directs our words and actions even when we are not aware of its influence...." (P. 145)
Yeah that sounds like Said to me. Blah blah blah, multiblahcultureblahblah. All thoughts thought are dictated by the culture in which I grew up, white-ish, raaaaacist, imperialist, crusadery, blah de blah.

Me? I never knew which lingo came first either; the stoner or the stonee. Some days I'm the thrower of the stone, some days I'm the throwee. Other days I'm the stone itself. Them's the three yappers in my infernal stonebonics conversation

Took a look in my library and I do not have Said's work, Eastern Mind, Western Eyes, wait, I mean I don't have Said's book, Orientalism. I have nothing by Said in my collection. I better fix that. How can a library be considered complete with out Said's seminal work of pseudo-scholarship?

I did spot 8 books by Bernard Lewis and 5 by Ibn Warraq (including his Defending the West: A Critique of Edward Said's Orientalism). I mention those titles, marked and parked on my shelves, only because those writers show up as Orientalists below.

Meahwhile, for/from the archives, here's some previous commentary regarding Edward said:
May 7, 2008
Edward Said's Shadowy Legacy
Tricky with argument, weak in languages, careless of facts: but, thirty years on, Said still dominates debate

Said had a problem with languages. For example, when discussing the writings of Sir William Jones and Friedrich Schlegel, he was mysteriously determined to deny that Sanskrit, Persian, German and Greek all belonged to the same broad group of languages – a sort of club to which Arabic could not belong. Ibn Warraq, in discussing Said’s attitude to Orientalists, remarks that he was “particularly jealous of their mastery of languages”. German scholars dominated Arabic, Hebrew and Sanskrit studies in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, yet Said avoided any substantial discussion of their work. Some critics have argued that this was because the pre-eminence of German Orientalists did not fit his thesis about the interdependence of Orientalism and imperialism in the Middle East, but others have suggested that it was because his German was not very good. Varisco has noted how Said mistranslates Goethe’s famous line “Gottes ist der Orient!” as “God is the Orient”. He has also spotted that Nerval’s “La mer d’Ionie” was mistranslated as “the Ionian sky”. Ibn Warraq is unhappy with Said’s English, specifically with his misuse of the adverb “literally” and his confusion of scatology with eschatology. Other critics have wondered about Said’s Arabic.
*****
Orientalists Fight Back

For a number of years now, Islamologists have been aware of the disastrous effect of Said’s Orientalism on their discipline. Professor Berg has complained that the latter’s influence has resulted in "a fear of asking and answering potentially embarrassing questions - ones which might upset Muslim sensibilities....".

For Clive Dewey, Said’s book "was, technically, so bad; in every respect, in its use of sources, in its deductions, it lacked rigour and balance. The outcome was a caricature of Western knowledge of the Orient, driven by an overtly political agenda. Yet it clearly touched a deep vein of vulgar prejudice running through American academe".

The most famous modern scholar who not only replied to but who wiped the floor with Said was, of course, Bernard Lewis. Lewis points to many serious errors of history, interpretation, analysis and omission. Lewis has never been answered let alone refuted.
'Nuff said on Said for today, yes?

And, since you asked, Bill Gates' Rule Numero Uno:
Life is not fair - get used to it.

Nixon Had Good Reasons for Being Nixonian

Nixon's The One

Any one else getting tired of reading of Obama's South Side thug paranoia as "Nixonian?"
Cheap usage is giving Nixonianism a bad name. Heh.

Knock it off.
Let Nixon rest in peace. Nixon had a reason for being Nixonian.
What's Obama's excuse?

Bible Totin' Keyser Soze Homer Keezer Sh*t-Canned at the Depot

Six Time Homer Award Winner worker fired for wearing 'under God' button
Keezer says for 19 months, ever since he started working as a cashier at The Home Depot in Okeechobee, he's worn a button with an American flag on it that reads: "One nation under God, indivisible."
Trev didn't start working at The Home Depot to make a religious statement. He just wanted to earn money for college.
Keezer sees the quotation, taken from the pledge of allegiance, as his way of supporting American troops at war, and of expressing his Christian personal faith.
"I was cashier of the month and I've won six 'Homer' awards -- that's the highest award you can get at Home Depot."
"I want to go to school to become a nurse," said the 20-year-old Okeechobee resident.

Just follow the corporate rules, son. And work hard, save your money and carry a small Bible or a large Koran and you should be okay.
Bank of America don't like Old Glory much either.

By datechguy
You don’t get much bigger than this:
The votes of every member of Congress affect every American, so it’s important for all of us to pay attention to this important Congressional campaign in upstate New York. I am very pleased to announce my support for Doug Hoffman in his fight to be the next Representative from New York’s 23rd Congressional district. It’s my honor to endorse Doug and to do what I can to help him win, including having my political action committee, SarahPAC, donate to his campaign the maximum contribution allowed by law.
Newt Who?

Flu Shot Obamacare

Yeah I get the seasonal flu shot every year. My doc says "Stop on by the office and we'll give you one. No charge, no appointment necessary." He says that every year. Costs a little in my coveted time to get over there but saves me twenty-five bucks. Couldn't get over there this year so thought I'd pay for one at work. Then our work Nurse cancelled the shots -- but she emailed me with a place that would be giving them for free on a Saturday a few weeks ago. Went out there early, planning to take the shot. The line -- an hour before they were set to open -- was four blocks long, three folks wide, and I had no desire to line up with the concerned, early, aged, blessed masses so I went out for breakfast instead.

Later work Nurse rescheduled the office space shots and I forked over my twenty-five bucks, got the shot. Made me a little feverish this year, sore-throated, but so what? I don't much like real flu anymore. When I was a kid back in the Northern Interior and prone to the aching tonsils, Mom would bring me hot chocolate when I was flued in, tomato soup in bed for lunch, a stack of books but no tv allowed; but she won't do that for me anymore, so I'd rather stay healthy.

One thing leading to 'nother, I was thinking about Fr. Neuhous this morning, may he rest in peace, and went over to First Things and saw their blogs and started poking around and there's Jim Hoft with a link to great pics of poor cheddarheads waiting in the rain for their flu shots. That Wisconsin line looks just like the line out here in LaLaLand.

The future's looking bright but the present is pretty dreary; hope and change surely got ugly fastly.

Sharia: It Plays In Peoria (AZ)

Mr. Potato Head
Father runs down daughter in Peoria parking lot

Police seek suspect, vicitms hospitalized
October 22, 2009 10:38 AM
Staff report
STAFF REPORT
Peoria police are searching for a man they say ran down his 20-year-old daughter in a parking lot for becoming “too 'westernized’ and ... not living according to their traditional Iraq values.”
Noor Faleh Almaleki of Surprise was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Another woman, Amal Edan Khalaf, 43, of Surprise also was struck and is in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives from the Peoria Police Violent Crimes Unit, after talking with family and friends, learned Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 48, of Glendale was the driver and is Noor Faleh Almaleki’s father.
Though some might ask*, Who is a father to this girl?
Away with all judgementalisms and yes, let us be inclusive. Traditional Iraqi/Islamic values include such as: motoring over your daughter and her friends. It's an honor thing. Different strokes for different folks and whatnot.

Jerusalem Still Occupied by Zionist Interlopers

Updated on Thursday, October 22, 2009, 20:50
Cairo: An apparently drunk Sudanese passenger tried to hijack an Istanbul-Cairo Egypt Air flight and divert it to Jerusalem, but was overpowered by air marshalls, a senior official said on Thursday.

Minutes after take-off yesterday, the 26-year old man snatched a knife provided with meals for first-class passengers and put it to the neck of an air hostess, head of the Civil Aviation Authority Imad Sallam said.

He told her that the plane is now being hijacked and said, "take me to Jerusalem".

Sallam said the air marshalls at the back of the plane ran to the air hostess, overpowered the man and tied him. He seemed to have been drunk. The knife used was a plastic one.

The antecedents of the Sudanese man is currently under investigation, officials said.

The plane was carrying 87 passengers.

UConn Football Player Died of Stab to Stomach

Police have arrested Johnny Hood, 21, of Hartford and charged him with interfering with an officer and breach of peace. An incident report says Hood was identified by witnesses as being involved in the altercation, and gave police a false name. Hood was arraigned Monday.

Hood told police he was looking around on the ground for his gold teeth, according to police records.

Here, Johnny Hood, you can borrow some'o'my pimped out teeth.

From the Contento Photo Archives
1992? 1993?

How easy it is to forget -- or never to have noticed in the first place -- how long we've been talking about this. Accompanying the photo in the Contento Archives is a gentle 1993 Hadley Arkes essay from National Review, July 5.
THE CLOSET STRAIGHT: When Andrew Sullivan Pleads for gay marriage, has he thought about what marriage is?:

"The Politics of Homosexuality" confirms, at length, what anyone who has been with Andrew Sullivan can grasp within five minutes: he regards his erotic life as the center of his being, but he also conveys the most powerful need to seek that erotic fulfillment within a framework of domesticity, of the normal and the natural. The most persisting thread of anguish in the essay is the pain of awareness and reconciliation in his own family, with the recurring memory of his father weeping when Andrew declared, as he says, his sexuality. Sullivan reserves some of his most stinging words for the producers of a "queer" politics, aimed at "cultural subversion." That brand of politics would simply confirm the strangeness of homosexuals, and deepen the separation from their families
. . .
But the secret that dare not speak its name is that he really is, after all, a domesticated man, settled in his marriage. As a writer and a man, Andrew Sullivan is committed to an understanding of political life that finds its ground in nature. And he takes, as the core of our civic life, marriage and the laws that sustain marriage. For all of that, we here, composed, as we are, of eros and of dust, love him.
Not love-love, nope; but love, you bet.
Now read that whole thing. Written about der beagle before he went kooks.

Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Raaaaacist Racist

From over in The Corner, where the adults think, work and live:
In the arena of football, Rush has been burned by such false accusations of racism before. His stint as an NFL commentator was abbreviated when he noted that there exists in professional football a racial stereotype holding that blacks make poor quarterbacks, and that certain sports writers wished to see the Philadelphia Eagles’ black quarterback, Donovan McNabb, succeed, for reasons racial and political. Rush was punished for speaking a truth so unexceptional and obvious that even the liberal web magazine Slate was forced to acknowledge: “Rush Limbaugh Was Right: Donovan McNabb isn’t a great quarterback, and the media do overrate him because he is black.”

Rush’s audience is full of fans who first tuned in expecting to be offended by the hateful, arrogant, screaming oaf of media caricature, only to discover that Rush, for all his puckishness, is in fact a serious man, funny and self-deprecating. He is also a man who spends 15 hours a week making the case for liberty and American exceptionalism — and the case against overweening liberalism — in one of America’s most important public forums. For that he will never be forgiven

And yes I know that's dog-killer Vick, not McNabb, so no need to go there.

Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em

Size does matter. And, as those of you who know me know: I would know.
Greater length is only half the story.

Fine tobacco is its own best filter. I'm liking that claim.
Speaking of smoking, nah, speaking of the truth, the whole truth, nuttin' but the truth, trooly troo trooth as found only in the Wikipedia place -- that place where all the true journalists do their true research -- anti-smoker Hitler, yes that Hitler, Adolf Hitler, Chancellor Hitler, Hitler of many titles Hitler, Chancellor Fuhrer Hitler, Führer und Reichskanzler Hitler, Führer und Oberster Befehlshaber der Wehrmacht Hitler, Führer des Großdeutschen Reiches Hitler, dreamed not only of a thousand year run, but dreamed also of a tobacco free reich. Part of health care reform, no doubt. It's for the kindervolk.

2nd Amendment & Ursula Andress

La decima vittima

What? I gotta say something about this? I don't think so.

You insist? Okay then; science-wise it's the Usuline prototype of the Wonder Bra, or, in Italiano, the Chiedo Reggiseno -- though one must admit the Germans say it best: Wunder Bustenhalter.

Before reality tv there was The 10th Victim, giving, according to PopMatters,
. . . known international icons Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress safe haven to look and act fabulous. She, decked out in the latest Milan couture, he, sporting a bad blond dye job and ever-present shades, play a prickly game of cat and mouse set against the most modern - at least for 1965 - of ultra-chic urban backdrops.
Andress’ Caroline Meredith is the latest “winner” of The Big Hunt, a worldwide television phenomenon which sees participants act as “assassin” and “victim” alternately, each pursuit played out for points, profit, and a chance at retiring a decathlete (one who successfully completes 10 missions). She is only one victory away from earning said title - and the $1 million prize that goes with it.
Youngish and impressionable, I first saw this movie on tv in black and white in the early 70's, over at Joe's house. Carol and the kids weren't around. This nightclubby scene stayed with me.
Subtitles unnecessary.

The question of whether President Obama should send more troops to Afghanistan misses the point.

What Obama really needs to do is: Invent a time machine, go back to the 2008 presidential campaign and not say, over and over and over again, that Afghanistan was a "war of necessity" while the war in Iraq was a "war of choice." (Oh, and as long as you're back there, ditch Van Jones, Valerie Jarrett and that gay "school safety" czar.)

The most important part of warfare is picking your battlefield, and President Bush picked Iraq for a reason.

Neither Iraq nor Afghanistan attacked us on 9/11 -- or the dozen other times American embassies, barracks and buildings came under jihadist onslaught since Jimmy Carter presided over "regime change" in Iran in 1979. Both countries -- and others -- gave succor to terrorists who had attacked the U.S. repeatedly, and would do so again.

As liberals endlessly reminded us during the three weeks of war in Afghanistan before the U.S. military swept into Kabul, Afghanistan has all the makings of a military disaster. It is mountainous, cave-pocked, tribal, has no resources worth fighting for and a populace that makes Khalid Sheikh Mohammed look like Alistair Cooke.

By contrast, Iraq had a relatively educated, pro-Western populace, but was ruled by a brutal third-world despot.

It's always something with the Muslims. You either have mostly sane people governed by a crazy dictator -- Iraq, Iran and Syria (also California and Michigan) -- or a crazy people governed by relatively sane leaders -- Pakistan and Afghanistan, post-U.S. invasion (also Vermont and Minnesota). There are also insane people ruled by insane leaders (but enough about the House Democratic Caucus). Sane people with sane rulers has not been fully tried yet.

Not only could regime change in Iraq work, but Iraq's countryside was susceptible to America's overwhelming air power. Also, Iraq has fabulous natural resources. Once the U.S. got control of Iraq's oil fields, the Shia, Sunni and Kurds could decide to either prosper together or starve together. (And it's not just oil: They're basically sitting on top of most of the world's proven reserves of cab drivers.)

By contrast, there aren't a lot of sticks that can be used in a wasteland like Afghanistan, where the people live in caves and scratch out a living in the dirt. The only "carrot" we might be able to offer them would be actual carrots.

But Democrats couldn't care less about military strategy -- at least any "strategy" that doesn't involve allowing soldiers to date one another. To the extent you can get liberals to focus on national security at all, you will find they are rooting against their own country.

Liberals sneered at Bush's description of Iraq as the "central front of the war on terror" and a step toward the "democratization of the Middle East" -- as Mark Danner did in the Sept. 11, 2005, New York Times -- because sneering was all they could do. By design, Iraq was the central front in the war on terrorism.

Any fanatic who hated the Great Satan, owned an overnight bag and was not already working for The New York Times was lured across the border into Iraq ... to be met by the awesome force of the U.S. military. Bush chose the battlefield that made the best flytrap for Islamic crazies and also that was most amenable to regime change.

Now nearly all denizens of the Middle East want the U.S. to invade them, so they can live in democracy, too. As Thomas Friedman inadvertently admitted, Lebanese voters credit their recent free election, in which the voters threw out Hezbollah, to President Bush. (American liberals, naturally, gave the credit to Obama, who they also believe is responsible for the sun rising every morning.)

Brave Iranian students who protested the tyrant Ahmadinejad did so because of Iraq -- and then they stopped because of Obama's indifference. Sadly for them, America's foreign policy will now be based on a calculus of political correctness, not national security.

During the campaign, Obama prattled on about Iraq being a "war of choice" and Afghanistan a "war of necessity" for no more thoughtful reason than a desire to win standing ovations from treasonous liberals.

But lo and behold, those very liberals who were champing at the bit to fight in Afghanistan are suddenly full of objections to the war there, too. As Frank Rich points out: "Afghanistan is not Iraq. It is poorer, even larger and more populous, more fragmented and less historically susceptible to foreign intervention."

Now they notice.

Afghanistan is a brutal battlefield, largely invulnerable to modern warfare -- something the British and Russians learned. But as our military under Bush showed the world in 21 days, scimitar-wielding savages are no match for the voluntary civilian troops of a free people.

Bush removed the Taliban from power, captured or killed the lunatics and, for the next seven years, about the only news we heard out of Afghanistan were occasional announcements of parliamentary elections, new schools, water and electricity plants.

The difficult choice Obama faces in Afghanistan is entirely of his own making, not his generals' and certainly not Bush's. It was Obama's meaningless blather about Afghanistan being a "war of necessity" during the campaign that has moved the central front in the war on terrorism from Iraq -- a good battleground for the U.S. -- to Afghanistan -- a lousy battlefront for the U.S.

And it was Obama's idea to treat war as if it's an ordinary drug bust, reading suspects their Miranda rights and taking care not to put civilians in harm's way.

A Democrat is president and, once again, America finds itself in an "unwinnable war." I know Democrats will never learn, but I wish the voters would.
