Swink, a Navy corpsman from Yucca Valley, was killed Aug. 27 during combat operations in southern Afghanistan's restive Helmand province. Navy corpsmen accompany infantry Marines on patrol to render medical assistance, sharing their risks.

Here Navy Corpsman James Michael Swink provides medical care to a boy with a hurt foot in Afghanistan, as two of the boy’s friends look on. Swink, from Yucca Valley, deployed to the country six weeks ago with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines. (Family photo):

When the news of "Doc"'s death was announced on Facebook, scores of NAVY mothers changed their profile pictures to honor his sacrifice. His star is now gold like his heart.
May God comfort his family with the peace that passes understanding.
