Roque was born in the Philippines and came to the U.S. with his family in 2003, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram. He took classes at Harbor College and worked several jobs while waiting for his green card, which took about a year, then enlisted in the Army.

Army Spc. Lester G. Roque, 23, of Torrance, Calif. was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy; died Nov. 10, 2007 in Aranus, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when their patrol was attacked by direct fire from enemy forces.

Army Corporal Lester G. Roque died along with five others -- Army Captain Matthew C. FerraraSgt. Jeffery S. Mersman, Pfc. Joseph M. Lancour, Marine Sgt. Phillip A. Bocks and Army Specialist Sean K.A. Langevin.

Home," Army Spc. Lester Roque wrote, "is where she is."
The South Bay soldier was biding his time, serving the United States in Afghanistan, waiting for "three months to go" before he could return home to his beloved wife, Leikathryn.
